  9.    Back in the seventies physicist Harley Ruthledge of
  10. Southeeast Missouri State Univ. investigated UFO's doing
  11. much of the fieldwork himself.  He even published a book
  12. about his findings in 1981.
  13.    Enter neuroscientist Michael Persinger of Laurentian
  14. University in Ontario, Canada.  Persinger believes that
  15. UFO's can be explained by earthquake activity, which, he
  16. says, releases energy in the form of balls of light.  After
  17. exhuming 72 of Rutledge's old UFO reports, Persinger now
  18. says they prove his theory correct.  Indeed, says Persinger,
  19. when he put Rutledge's data to the test, he found that many
  20. of the sightings -20 percent in one cluster and 55% in
  21. another- occured on the day of or on the day before, major
  22. seismic activity in the area.
  23.    Rutledge doesn't feel these numbers prove Persinger's
  24. theory at all.
  25. "If you make the right statistical adjustments," he says,
  26. "you can find a relationship between nearly any two sets of
  27. data.  I saw the vehicles," he adds, "and they were
  28. intelligently controlled."
  29.    Unfazed, Persinger says that "many experiments in
  30. psychology show that what people see is a function of their
  31. personality and beliefs.
